Axial expansion bellows are designed to accommodate pipe expansion in the axial direction of a straight pipe section. They can also absorb small lateral deflections or slight angular rotation concurrent with a reduced axial movement, depending on the length and diameter of the bellows. These movements are not the primary function of axial bellows, and if the application requires more lateral or angular movement then another type of expansion joints may be required. Axial bellows are simplest form of a flexible element either with flange end or Butt Weld End Expansion joint.

A Universal bellows is consists of two bellows connected by a common pipe. This type of assembly allows any combination of the three basic movements i.e. axial, lateral and angular. A universal bellows is used in cases with more lateral movements that can not be absorbed by a single axial bellows. The lateral movement capability of a universal bellows depends on the center spool pipe length. Appropriate for systems that do not require pressure thrust restraint.
